One of the oldest surgeries in Chichester, the practice was first situated in the Pallants, but moved to West Street in the early 1940s when Drs Stanley and Dick were in partnership at the inception of the NHS 60 years ago. They were joined by Dr Tony Sears in the 1960s, and after the retirement of the founding partners, Dr Sears was joined by Drs John Kelly and Alan Copsey in the 1970s. In the early 1980s the practice moved from their restricted premises in West Street to a converted residential property at No. 4, Parklands Road.
For the first few years there was also a small ‘shack’ at the end of the current car part where a well-known local medical character, Dr. Bernays, had a small branch surgery. At about this time Dr Margaret Orr joined the practice, and Dr Kelly left to work at the McMillan Unit at King Edward VII hospital, being replaced by Dr Tim Hammond. When Dr Bernays retired, his surgery was demolished and the car park extended. The main surgery was then also improved to provide accommodation for the District Nurses and Health Visitors, and give the practice nurses another treatment room.
Subsequent partners have included Dr Jim Price (1993) and Dr David Patient (1996), and also Drs. Charlie Lavender and Chris Arden both of whom have now moved on: Dr Lavender is still a partner in an Australian practice, south of Canberra, and Dr Arden practises in Eastleigh. 3 years ago Dr Mary Campbell joined us, and more recently we have welcomed Dr Eric Clarke to our partnership. Dr Catherine Shipsey has been a very loyal and much-appreciated salaried doctor for nearly 20 years, and recently Dr Charlotte Williams (another former GP registrar) has joined us for 4 sessions per week.
